Your Newborn Session
Congratulations! I’m looking forward to capturing these fleeting newborn moments for you and your family. I’ve gathered some information that previous clients have found useful, and laid it out here for you. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me!
Newborn sessions are more involved than any other type of session. Achieving the cuddly, relaxed poses takes time and patience while your baby settles! For this reason, I don’t recommend siblings come along to posed sessions. If you have chosen the Deluxe newborn package, it can be beneficial to make arrangements for siblings after your family photos are complete. Some families take a trip to the playground with Dad, or drive separate vehicles so the rest of the family can head home while Mom, baby & I finish up our shots. Please contact me if you have any questions.
Prior to Your Session
Remember to dress your baby in something easy to remove, like a sleeper, that won’t leave marks on the skin. Make sure to trim finger & toe nails, but don’t fret about flaky skin or baby acne - that will be taken care of in editing! If you have any special photo requests, color preferences, or blankets/wraps that you hope to use, please let me know in advance so I can plan accordingly.
Your Newborn Session
Due to the nature of newborn photography (milk breaks and diaper changes) expect sessions to last up to 2 hours. When you arrive, we will undress him/her down to a diaper and swaddle in one of the wraps from my collection. Before we begin photos, you should feed and burp baby. Then, while baby is content and drifting off, I will wrap and pose him/her. If you’re planning on using a pacifier, please bring it along.
Please dress your baby in the smallest size diapers that will fit. Size 1 diapers are often quite bulky and hard to cover with wraps and prop clothing.
The Studio
The studio is located at my home - 160 Owens Road in Canton, PA. You will see a gray farmhouse, and a red barn/shed with a white door. The studio is inside the white door. There is no restroom in the studio.
Keep in mind, the room will be warm to keep baby content - feel free to bring along some cooler clothing, as well as snacks, a book, or whatever else you’d need to keep you comfortable.
What to Wear
For family shots in the studio, outfit choices have a big impact on the quality of your photo.
Do Not Wear:
Bright Colors
Stripes or busy patterns
Outfits on children that need a lot of adjusting (posing young children with a newborn doesn’t usually allow the time to fine-tune clothes before baby wakes or the children are ready to move on)
Shirts with buttons or bulky shirt pockets on the chest (like jean jackets) which make it hard to pose baby on your chest.
Sleeveless shirts for adults
Do Wear:
Coordinated Muted tones or neutrals
Solid colors or simple patterns
Long Sleeves in shades of gray/black are my personal preference, or children in muted tones.
The safety & comfort of your baby are my top priority. As all newborns are different, I won’t do poses your baby is resistant to or uncomfortable in. We will take breaks any time he/she is upset or not settling. All fabric drops and wraps are washed after every session.
